Francis Wachira, a 62-year-old cobbler from Nairobi's Kasarani estate, has an inspiring story of turning his passion into a successful business and becoming a landlord.
Wachira's journey began in 1986 when he moved from Nyahururu to start life as a small peasant farmer. However, he soon realized that farming was seasonal and didn't bring in much income, so he took up shoe-mending as a night job.
Over 30 years on, Wachira has bought a pickup and built four one-bedroom rental houses, all thanks to his dedication to his craft. He attributes his success to his hard work, honesty, and quality work, which has earned him the trust of his clients.
“Kushona viatu ndio kazi yangu maishani (shoe-repair is what I have done all my life). I have been at it for over 35 years and still counting. I have managed to save some little money to build my rentals and buy my car,” Wachira said.
Wachira has also educated three kids: two to high school and one to college. He believes that dedication and determination are key to success, and he plans to continue building more houses.
“Here (pointing at his office) is where I get money. I have nowhere to go so I will work here for as long as possible. My prayer is to save more and continue building,” he said.
Wachira's story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination. Despite facing challenges, he has managed to build a successful business and become a landlord, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
