Published on May 12, 2020, the National Treasury's budget estimates reveal that former President Mwai Kibaki will start earning an average of Sh. 2.86 million per month from July.
As per the estimates, Kibaki's pension and perks will stand at Sh. 34.43 million in the financial year set to start in July.
According to a report by the Business Daily, Kibaki's average monthly payout is more than double President Uhuru Kenyatta's official salary of Sh. 1.44 million.
Former presidents in Kenya are entitled to 80 percent of the salary paid to the sitting president, as well as perks such as fuel, house, and entertainment allowances.
Notably, the Treasury spent Sh. 250 million to refurbish Kibaki's office block at Nyari Estate in Nairobi in 2015, and the government purchased the office block in late 2013 for Sh. 250 million.
Additionally, Mwai Kibaki has a State-financed Sh. 500 million Mweiga home in Nyeri built on a 100-acre piece of land.
