Kenya's national basketball team, the 'Morans', is not letting the COVID-19 pandemic derail their preparations for upcoming tournaments.

With public health warnings against assembly and social distancing in place, team captain Griffin Ligare has been conducting makeshift training sessions in Nairobi's parking lots to stay in shape.

The Kenya Basketball Federation is also maintaining team cohesion through online programs, including training for the game's medical personnel and coaches.

According to Ligare, a point guard, it's essential to keep their focus on the ball, both literally and figuratively.

'We cannot go to our usual training grounds at YMCA Shauri Moyo and the Nyayo National Stadium, so we have to work wherever we are - and that is, basically, at home - with the small amount of space we have,' Ligare told Nation Sport.

He added, 'To work out at home is not easy. It's very tough, but we just have to motivate each other as a team by calling each other and staying fit since we cannot train as a team. Our goal this year is to qualify for the Afro Basket tournament.'

Shooting guard Tyler Okari shares Ligare's sentiment, believing that Kenya will brush aside stiff competition to qualify for the tournament proper next year.

Fiba Africa, the continental basketball governing body, has maintained that all its activities planned from October and beyond will go ahead as scheduled, provided Fiba World gives the green light for competition to resume.
