On May 12, 2020, the Senate witnessed a dramatic shift in leadership as the Jubilee party replaced Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika from their positions.
Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka revealed that he had received communication from the Jubilee Coalition through Deputy Majority Whip Irungu Kang'ata, informing him of the changes.
The communication was accompanied by relevant documents, including the minutes of the Jubilee coalition parliamentary group meeting, which was attended by 20 Senators.
According to the meeting's resolution, Senator Samuel Poghisio was elected as the new Majority leader, while Senator Kang'ata took on the role of Majority Whip, and Senator Haji Ali became the Deputy Majority Whip.
Senator Dullo Fatuma remained the Deputy Majority Leader.
However, the changes were met with resistance from Senator Murkomen, who claimed that the Speaker was under duress to make the decision, citing a ruling by the Political parties disputes Tribunal that quashed the Jubilee-KANU pact.
Minority Leader James Orengo intervened, accusing Senator Murkomen of disrespecting the President and undermining the authority of the Speaker.
