Published on May 12, 2020, AFC Leopards, a Kenyan Premier League side, is embarking on a membership drive to achieve financial independence.
The club has already registered 1,407 members by the end of April and hopes to reach 10,000 members by the end of the year.
Each member pays Sh1,200 to register, which has helped the club meet some of its basic needs following the exit of SportPesa, its main sponsor.
According to Dan Shikanda, the team's chairman, "Having registered members is the future of community clubs as far as sustainability is concerned and we are very thankful for 1407 fully registered members we have. They have come in very handy especially after we lost our sponsor."
Shikanda also emphasized the importance of registered members, stating, "We also have loyal fans who have not yet registered but also help the club in one way or another but we urge them to register fully and stand with the club as it charts its way to a great future."
Registered members enjoy benefits such as subsidised rates for merchandise and reduced stadium entry fees, with the club working on additional perks for its members.
