On May 12, 2020, media personality Joey Muthengi's Instagram account was compromised by a hacker who demanded a bribe to return it.
Joey, a popular TV host and actress, took to social media to warn her fans about the incident and cautioned them against falling prey to similar scams.
"Hey friends, it appears my account has been compromised/hacked. Please do not agree to any seemingly lucrative deals on my behalf," she posted.
However, Joey refused to give in to the hacker's demands, stating that she would never pay a bribe for something that rightfully belonged to her.
"Whoever you are, you won. I hope this helps you sleep at night. Take the account. I pray it brings you coro…I mean…happiness. I will not ever pay bribe for that which is mine…not in this lifetime," she wrote.
Joey has since surrendered her Instagram account to the hacker, but has assured her fans that she will be back on the platform soon.
"I will open a new account soon. I hope you will follow me there. All the hugs," she posted.
When you try logging into Joey's Instagram account, you are met with a message stating that the page no longer exists.
Joey's incident serves as a cautionary tale for social media users to be vigilant and not fall prey to scams and hacking attempts.
