On May 11, 2020, hundreds of residents in Eastleigh section three clashed with police after being barred from accessing sections two and three of the area.

Protesters claimed that stringent measures restricting movement and businesses were causing significant damage to the local economy and hurting citizens.

Security agencies had imposed restrictions on movement from Eastleigh section three to sections two and one, citing the need to control the spread of Covid-19.

However, residents argued that the measures were an overreaction and would stretch damage to local economies if kept in place for too long.

Eastleigh is a major business hub in the county, generating up to 2 billion shillings daily in revenue on a normal day.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe had announced the closure of markets and eateries within Eastleigh and Old Town area in Mombasa, following increased cases of Covid-19 infections.

According to Kagwe, the cessation of movement was to protect people within the affected areas.
