On May 11, 2020, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced a measure to cushion airlines from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The aviation regulator extended the payment period for expired licences, allowing carriers to operate without worrying about licence renewal during this challenging period.
According to KCAA Director-General Gilbert Kibe, the deferment takes effect immediately, and licences will be extended for 45, 90, or 120 days to help airlines recover from huge losses.
The measures implemented by the State, including grounding planes and suspending air travel, have severely impacted the aviation industry, with domestic carriers being the hardest-hit.
Players in the industry have requested a Sh3 billion bailout through the Kenya Association of Air Operators.
