Reigning champions Benfica have confirmed that midfielder David Tavares, 21, has tested positive for Covid-19 after diagnostic tests were conducted at the Benfica Campus on Friday, May 8.
The player, who is reportedly asymptomatic, will comply with the isolation duration recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and abide by the rules of Portugal's Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
Benfica's Medical Department has maintained a strict contingency plan since its professionals returned to activity at the Benfica Campus, and the football team will continue to follow a recovery plan with training sessions carried out by small groups and individualized work.
According to the Portuguese government's announcement on April 30, games could resume pending approval from health authorities. This comes as five people at Famalicao, including three players and two staff members, have tested positive for Covid-19, and league rivals Vitoria Guimaraes confirmed three cases on Saturday, May 9, with Moreirense confirming two more.
