This archive report was first published on 11 May 2020.

On May 6, 2020, Senate Minority Leader James Orengo issued a notice removing Senator Ledama Olekina from the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee and the Senate Business Committee, citing Senate Standing Order 190.

However, Senator Olekina refused to acknowledge the notice, instead continuing to chair meetings of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee.

Senator Olekina's lawyers have argued that he was validly elected as a member of the Minority Party in the Senate, and that his removal was therefore unlawful.

On May 11, 2020, Justice Weldon Korir of the High Court certified Senator Olekina's case as urgent, temporarily stopping his removal from the committee.

The matter will be mentioned on May 14, 2020, for further direction on the hearing of the application.
