On May 11, 2020, Kenya's security agencies dealt a significant blow to terrorism when they foiled a planned attack by the Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab. The thwarted plot was set to take place during the Holy month of Ramadan, a time of heightened holiness and family bonding for Muslims.

Al-Shabaab, known for its desire for public attention, had planned to abduct Kenyans near the border and hijack several government vehicles. However, through a joint effort between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the terrorists' plans were successfully disrupted.

Al-Shabaab's ultimate goal is to establish a caliphate across Somalia and East Africa. The group has been known to infiltrate the ranks of the Somali government, serving in the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and establishing parallel administrative structures. In addition, they have been forcing residents in Mogadishu and other Somali towns to pay zakat (taxes) by setting up roadblocks on major routes.

The number one target of Al-Shabaab's attacks and power struggle is Somalia's own citizens, with Kenyans and the KDF being the second biggest victims. Kenya's leadership has a significant responsibility to put an end to the terrorism and restore peace in Somalia.

Kenya's foreign policy is best served by having good relations with its neighbors, and supporting Somalia in its fight against terrorism is a crucial aspect of this. The country has suffered numerous losses due to attacks from the Islamic group, with residents of northeastern counties being more familiar with the threat.

It is worth noting that a lot more goes into thwarting terrorist attacks than meets the eye. The brave men and women of the KDF and NIS deserve our appreciation for their role in fighting terror.
