On May 11, 2020, the High Court certified as urgent a matter involving the election of Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina as chair of the powerful County Public Accounts and Investments Committee in the Senate.
The court's decision temporarily bars the removal of Ole Kina from the position and the nomination of a new chairman.
Justice Weldon Korir scheduled the case for mention on May 14, 2020, for further direction.
The standoff between Senator Ole Kina and his party, ODM, over control of the committee chair began after Ole Kina was elected chair with five votes against his rival, Sam Ongeri (Kisii Senator), who received four votes.
However, Ole Kina's win was short-lived as Siaya Senator James Orengo moved to withdraw the party's membership from the committee and notified the Senate of Ole Kina's discharge and removal from the Senate Business Committee.
Senator Orengo wrote to Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, stating, 'In accordance with the Senate Standing order 190, I hereby give notice of the discharge and removal of the Senator Ledama Ole Kina from (CPAIC) and the senate Business Committee.'
