On May 11, 2020, a distressing incident unfolded in Nyamira, Kenya, where a group of residents took matters into their own hands, forcing one of their own to quarantine.
Alfred Moturi, a resident of Mishomoroni, Mombasa, had been allowed to travel to Nyamira by the authorities, accompanied by two nurses for a scheduled interview with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) team.
After dropping off the nurses at Bomet and Nyamira, Moturi returned home, only to be met with a villager's frantic cry that he had brought COVID-19 to the village.
Despite having tested negative for the virus before traveling and adhering to all Ministry of Health (MOH) requirements, including disinfecting his car at every stop, Moturi was taken to the police station by the area Assistant Chief, who then called an ambulance to transport him to the KMTC quarantine center in Nyamira.
Moturi was never given the opportunity to explain his situation or provide any context, and his car was confiscated by the police. He was left at the quarantine center, with no food, water, or any other provisions, and was forced to pay for his own stay.
As Moturi struggles to make sense of the situation, he wonders if the government that allowed him to travel from Mombasa is the same one detaining him in Nyamira. He appeals to the authorities to intervene and help him resolve this matter.
