On May 11, 2020, Kenya's COVID-19 tally reached 700, with 28 new cases reported within 24 hours.
Of these, nine cases were recorded in Kajiado County, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the county to seventeen.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman attributed the new cases to Kenyan truck drivers from Tanzania, who were tested at the Namanga border point.
"It concerns us when we see large numbers of cases at border counties," Aman said.
According to Aman, the nine cases in Kajiado were Kenyan truck drivers from Tanzania who were tested at the Namanga border point.
Other counties affected by the new cases include Mombasa, with 10 cases, and Nairobi, with 7 cases, bringing the country's coronavirus death toll to thirty-three after one more patient succumbed to the virus in Nairobi.
Wajir, another border county, accounted for two cases, raising the county's total coronavirus cases to 11.
As part of efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health had designated stopover areas for truckers transporting cargo to neighboring countries.
Director of Public Health Dr. Francis Kuria explained that the enhanced measures were necessary due to the cargo transport sector emerging as a potential weak link in the fight to contain COVID-19.
Seven Kenyan truck drivers are currently being treated in Uganda after testing positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
