Published on May 11, 2020, this article highlights the growing popularity of trout in Kenya, a fish introduced to the Mt Kenya region by an English explorer in the 1900s.

Trout is renowned for its high content of Omega-3 fatty acids, essential nutrients that play a crucial role in managing and preventing heart disease. Studies have also shown that Omega-3 fatty acids can help lower blood pressure, making trout a valuable addition to a healthy diet.

The fish boasts a unique appearance, with a silver colour fading to pearl white on the outside, a pinkish band running the length of the body, and small black spots on its back. When cooked, the flesh has a delicate texture, a mild flavour, and does not have a fishy smell or taste, making it a favourite among those who prefer a tender piece of beef steak.

Trout has become a common sight in the Mt Kenya region, with fishermen selling their catch along the Nairobi, Nyeri highway around Sagana area. Matatus drivers have even been spotted with trout tied to their side mirrors, a testament to the fish's popularity.

As you venture further into the Mt Kenya region towards Nanyuki, you'll find restaurants specialising in trout farming and serving. When purchasing trout, ensure it has no fishy smell, as this indicates that it's not fresh. The cost of trout varies depending on size and location.
