On May 11, 2020, the Ministry of Health in Kenya announced measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 among truckers.
According to Dr. Francis Kuria, Director of Public Health, the transport sector is a key area in terms of transmission of the disease.
Seven Kenyan truck drivers are being treated in Uganda after testing positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
The Ministry has designated specific stopover areas for truckers, including Malaba, Gilgil, Mlolongo, Mariakani, Mau Summit, Mai Mahiu, and Webuye.
Truckers operating between Mombasa and Malaba are allowed to stopover in Malaba, Gilgil, Mlolongo, and Mariakani, while those operating between Namanga and Nairobi have only one stopover point allowed in Mlolongo.
Dr. Kuria announced that the Ministry has scaled up the number of testing centers for cargo transporters along the Nairobi-Namanga corridor and Mombasa-Nairobi-Malaba corridor.
Testing facilities have been set up in various locations, including Miritini Municipal Dispensary in Mombasa, Lady Northey Health Centre and South B Clinic in Nairobi, Ahero South Hospital in Kisumu, and several other locations.
The requirement for a COVID-19 free certificate was adopted by the East African Community countries to ensure seamless movement of goods in the region.
