On Friday night, police in Mutomo, Kitui, arrested 11 people, including former Kenya Prisons commandant Daniel Ndambuki Mutua, for violating government curfew orders.

According to Mutomo Sub-County Police Commander Martin Sagalla, the group was arrested at a bar called Meeting Point in Mutomo market after police on patrol were drawn by their noise.

Mr. Sagalla stated that the curfew orders and social distancing rules apply to all Kenyans, regardless of their social standing, and that police will enforce the law without fear or favor.

Mr. Mutua, who retired from the prison service last year, owns the bar where the party was hosted.

He and the other suspects were released on cash bail on Saturday morning after undergoing a basic medical examination and will face charges in court on Monday morning.
