On Sunday, May 10, 2020, La Liga president Javier Tebas expressed his hope to resume the tournament on June 12, despite the recent surge in coronavirus cases among players and staff.
Just hours before Tebas' statement, five players from Spain's top two leagues tested positive for the virus, with three non-playing staff also contracting the disease.
"I would like it (the season resuming) to be June 12, but it will depend on the numbers," Tebas told Movistar.
He emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with the health authorities, who will determine the feasibility of resuming the tournament.
Despite the recent positive tests, Tebas remains optimistic about the prospects of a speedy resumption of the sport, citing the relatively low number of cases among the 2,500 individuals tested.
When the competition restarts, players will be tested 24 hours beforehand, and Tebas believes that with proper adherence to medical protocols, the risk of infection during matches is minimal.
La Liga has implemented a staggered training program, allowing players to carry out individual work at training grounds, with the aim of restarting competitive games in mid-June.
However, the third and fourth tiers in Spain will not complete their seasons, as confirmed by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Wednesday.
