Published on May 11, 2020, a group of Turkana county leaders have called for the reinstatement of suspended Turkana University College principal Thomas Akuja. Led by Senator Malachy Ekal and county Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary Peter Long'oli, the leaders met with county commissioner Muthama Wambua to discuss the matter.

According to Ekal, the allegations of financial misappropriation against Akuja are unfounded, and he should be reinstated immediately. Ekal emphasized that the institution should be led by a local, citing the presence of qualified professors like himself, Akuja, and Prof Lokuruka.

However, Wambua stated that the matter is complicated due to Akuja's court case and his recorded statement with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. Wambua urged residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.

Long'oli, on the other hand, expressed support for Akuja, stating that teachers want a local to head the institution. The current position is held by Prof Frederick Kassily.
