On May 11, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a promise to help AFC Leopards build a stadium, but the question remains: who holds the title deed to the land given to the club by the late President Daniel arap Moi in 1992?
Leopards and their rivals Gor Mahia benefited from Moi's philanthropy in 1992, each receiving Sh3 million during a State House function. The funds were a reward for their sterling performance, with Gor Mahia having won the Caf Winners' Cup in 1987 and AFC Leopards having won the Cecafa trophy.
Despite being formed over four decades ago in 1964, AFC Leopards continues to train at hired venues, including Nyayo National Stadium, which is in high demand for other functions. The club has also used Machakos, Bukhungu, Mumias, Afraha, and Kasarani stadiums after Nyayo was closed for renovation in 2016.
Former international Peter Lichungu has offered to provide documents to help AFC Leopards reclaim their land, which they claim was allocated by Moi. Lichungu fears that the land may have fallen into the hands of unscrupulous people in collusion with wayward Ministry of Lands officials.
