On May 10, 2020, Malta's ambassador to Finland, Michael Zammit Tabona, made headlines after a Facebook post comparing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler.

According to The Times of Malta, the diplomat wrote, "75 years ago we stopped Hitler. Who will stop Angela Markel? She has fulfilled Hitler's dream! To control Europe."

The post, which has since been deleted, sparked outrage and led to the Maltese foreign ministry instructing Tabona to remove the message.

Tabona, who had served as ambassador to Finland since 2014, subsequently resigned, as reported by The Times of Malta on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo told the newspaper that an apology would be sent to the German embassy.
