As of May 11, 2020, the Kenyan government has confirmed that 191 Kenyans living abroad have contracted coronavirus, with 77 recovering and 23 succumbing to the disease.
According to the Ministry of Health, the majority of deaths were reported in the US, with 10 fatalities, followed by the United Kingdom with 6 deaths, Italy with 2, and one death each in Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, South Africa, and France.
The Kenyan government had previously advised families who lost their kin abroad to bury or cremate them there, with those who wish to bring back the bodies doing so at their own cost.
“Families willing to bring home the bodies of their relatives will have to bear the costs or allow them to be cremated in a foreign land,” said Foreign Affairs PS Amb. Macharia Kamau.
Meanwhile, the total number of positive cases in Kenya rose to 672 after 23 new cases were confirmed, with 22 being Kenyan nationals and one a Burundian national.
However, the country reported good news as 32 COVID-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 239.
