On May 4th and 5th, 2020, the Mombasa Tea Auction recorded a significant decline in tea prices, with a kilogram selling at an average of $1.95. This is a decrease from the previous sale held on April 27th and 28th, 2020, where the average price per kilogram was $2.08.

According to the auction's records, a total of 12.2 million kilograms of tea were offered for sale, a slight decrease from the 12.3 million kilograms offered in the previous sale. Despite the decline in prices, 11 million kilograms of tea were sold, a significant increase from the 9.3 million kilograms sold in the same period last year.

The Kenya Tea Sector Lobby Group is pushing for reforms in the sector, aiming to improve tea farmers' earnings and uphold international standards in tea factories. Kenya is the world's largest black tea exporter, with the tea sector earning the country KSh117 billion from exports and KSh22 billion in local sales in 2019, as reported by The Standard.
