On Sunday, May 10, 2020, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) sought the Transport ministry's approval to waive aircraft landing and parking fees for local carriers, including Kenya Airways, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move aims to provide relief to airlines struggling to generate revenue amidst the grounding of planes and flight restrictions.

According to KAA, most planes are currently parked at airports, with only cargo services operating. The authority has requested the ministry to exempt local airlines from paying the fees, which range from $15 to $702 per day, depending on the size of the aircraft.

Transport ministry director of air services Nicholas Bodo confirmed receiving the plea, stating that the matter is being processed and will be decided by the Cabinet secretary.

Kenya Association of Air Operators (KAAO) executive secretary Eutychus Waithaka emphasized that the current situation makes it unsustainable for airlines to continue paying parking fees, which can range from $10 to over $100 per day.
