On Friday, May 8, 2020, Igembe North Police boss Apollo Busolo and his team made a significant breakthrough in the fight against motorcycle theft in Meru County. The police recovered over 20 motorcycles belonging to boda boda operators, which had been stolen in the area.

According to Busolo, the thefts were happening at the start of the 7 pm-5 am curfew hours, with some of the passengers being robbers. He said the motorcycles were stolen from different areas, and that the owners had suffered injuries during the incidents.

Busolo added that the owners had identified the stolen motorcycles and had provided the relevant ownership documents. The police were in the process of restoring the motorcycles to their rightful owners as they prosecuted the suspects.

Another 10 motorcycles were recovered from various areas in the last few days, according to Watu Credit, an agency that facilitates the acquisition of the assets on credit. The agency's asset recovery officer, Leonard Njogu, advised the owners to take personal precautions by assessing the passengers.

Several boda boda operators in Meru town, including Vincent Murithi, had fallen victim to what seemed an organised gang targeting areas in Imenti North. Murithi said that within the last few months, more than 10 motorcycles had been stolen in the area.
