On Saturday, May 9, 2020, Barcelona announced that France defender Samuel Umtiti had picked up a calf injury during the second day of individual training sessions at the club's Joan Gamper facility.
According to the Spanish champions, Umtiti suffered the injury to his right calf during the individual training session, but the extent of his absence was not specified.
However, Spanish media reports suggest that he will be unavailable for two or three weeks, which would likely see him return in time for a potential June 20 restart for football in Spain.
Umtiti, 26, joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2016 after helping France reach the final of Euro 2016. He also played a key role in France's successful 2018 World Cup campaign.
Before the season was suspended in March, Umtiti had played 16 times for the Catalan giants. He had previously been injured twice earlier in the campaign, causing him to miss 10 matches between September and November 2019.
Barcelona returned to training at the club's facility on Friday, May 8, after almost two months on lockdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed over 26,000 lives in Spain.
Footballers in Spain restarted training following the announcement of a government plan to end quarantine for professional players.
Individual training sessions are the first step towards what La Liga hopes will be a return to action in June, completing the 2019-20 season behind closed doors.
