On May 9, 2020, Barcelona announced that France defender Samuel Umtiti had picked up a calf injury in the second training session since the team's return from the coronavirus quarantine.

Umtiti, 26, suffered the injury to his right calf during an individual training session at the club's Joan Gamper facility, but the extent of his absence was not specified.

Spanish media reports suggest that he will be unavailable for two to three weeks, which would allow him to return in time for a potential June 20 restart of football in Spain.

Umtiti joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2016 after helping France reach the final of Euro 2016. He also played a key role in France's successful 2018 World Cup campaign.

Before the season was suspended in March, Umtiti had played 16 times for Barcelona, and had previously been injured twice, causing him to miss 10 matches between September and November 2019.

Barcelona returned to training on May 8, 2020, after almost two months on lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed over 26,000 people in Spain.

Footballers in Spain resumed training following the announcement of a government plan to end quarantine for professional players.

Individual training sessions are the first step towards a potential return to action in June, which would complete the 2019-20 season behind closed doors.
