On May 10, 2020, the National Olympic Committee-Kenya (NOC-K) held an online sports conference to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on athletes.
NOCK President Paul Tergat emphasized the need for collaboration with the government and other corporates to support vulnerable athletes who rely on sports for income.
"We will be seeking collaboration with the government through the Ministry of Sports and other corporates to help out vulnerable athletes who mainly rely on sports for income," Tergat said.
Speakers at the conference, including sports psychologist Kanyali Ilako and former world javelin champion Julius Yego, highlighted the mental health challenges faced by athletes due to the pandemic.
Ilako encouraged the sports fraternity to embrace the current reality of the COVID-19 pandemic to cope with the situation, while Yego admitted that athletes are mentally affected by the virus disruption.
Strength and conditioning trainer Geoffrey Kimani called on coaches to show leadership during this challenging time, and national volleyball team coach Paul Bitok shared his experience of improvising training for the Malkia Strikers.
