On Friday, Eliud Kipchoge kick-started the distribution of relief food to athletes in the Rift Valley, but the government's stimulus package is set to benefit sportspeople across the country.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the sports community, there have been calls to include athletes from other regions, as well as veteran sportspeople and legends, in the relief efforts.

Responding to these concerns, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed assured that the initiative is a countrywide drive, not limited to the Rift Valley region.

"We are targeting at least 1,530 sportspersons drawn from various disciplines with 901 'most in need' on our priority list countrywide," the CS stated in a statement published on May 9, 2020.

Each athlete will receive a package containing maize and wheat flour, rice, cooking oil, and pasta, while selected athletes will also receive financial support to cushion them and their families during the pandemic period.

"We are moving step by step, also depending on how the donations come through," added Sports Principal Secretary Joe Okudo. "Sportsmen and women are our brand ambassadors and keep us entertained, so we must come to their aid in their hour of need."

Kenya's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 649 with the announcement of 28 new positive test results on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
