On May 9, 2020, a 13-year-old boy in Nakuru County tested positive for COVID-19 at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital, where he had been admitted for over a month for tuberculosis treatment.
According to Area Chief Peter Chege, public health officials from the county visited the boy's home in Kimunya village, Solai location, and ordered the six family members to stay indoors and not allow any visitors.
The family, who are squatters and depend on daily labor to feed themselves, were among those affected by the Patel farm dam burst three years ago, which killed several people and left others destitute.
Chief Chege appealed for assistance for the family, who have six children, including the young boy who is a standard four pupil.
Despite the positive test result, the hospital's officer-in-charge, Dr. John Mburu, said further tests were being conducted to confirm the accuracy of the results.
Chief Chege emphasized the importance of awareness creation, hand-washing, physical distancing, and the stay-at-home policy to prevent the spread of the virus in the village.
