Kenya has confirmed 28 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases to 649. The cases were confirmed over the last 24 hours, with 24 being Kenyan nationals and 4 Tanzanians.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Rashid Aman said the number of Covid cases within the country's borders continues to rise and is a concern for the government.
The positive cases are distributed across the country, with 10 in Mombasa, 9 in Nairobi, 4 in Migori, 2 in Kajiado, and 1 each in Machakos, Kiambu, and Homabay.
Dr. Rashid emphasized the importance of testing and surveillance in border counties, citing the rise in cases in Migori and Kajiado. He announced that the ministry of health will build a testing facility in Namanga border point in collaboration with Kajiado county.
The ministry is also working with partners to conduct mass testing in identified hotspots, with a total of 241 samples taken and transported to Nairobi for analysis.
Dr. Rashid called upon the management of Kajiado and Migori counties to adhere to surveillance and screening procedures in line with laid down protocols.
He also announced additional measures to contain the disease in areas of Eastleigh in Nairobi and old town in Mombasa, which are on partial lockdown. The government has prohibited hawking, gatherings, and the closure of malls, markets, restaurants, and eateries in these areas.
Dr. Rashid warned supermarkets and malls that are not adhering to social distancing measures that they risk closure for failure to abide by the guidelines.
On a different matter, Dr. Rashid wished all lupus warriors well as they combat the disease during the commemoration of the lupus awareness day.
The ministry of health is working on a program to promote community awareness of the disease, even as researchers continue to look for a cure.
As of today, the government has registered 5 recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 207. The number of deaths has reached 30 after one more patient passed on.
