On May 9, 2020, Kenya marked a significant milestone in its fight against COVID-19, with five more patients being discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 207.
However, the country's death toll rose to 30 after a patient in Mombasa succumbed to the virus, according to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman.
"I am happy to note that today we have registered five additional recoveries. Unfortunately, we lost one more patient to this disease bringing the number to 30," Aman said.
Kenya's COVID-19 cases increased to 649 after 28 additional cases were reported out of 1,611 samples analyzed, with four Tanzanian nationals among the newly detected cases.
The cases were spread across various regions, with ten reported in Mombasa, nine in Nairobi, four in Migori, and two in Kajiado, among other areas.
Authorities are concerned about the apparent resumption of normalcy in urban areas, with increased traffic and crowded malls and supermarkets, and have imposed additional measures in Nairobi's Eastleigh and Mombasa's Old Town, including the prohibition of street hawking and gatherings.
