As the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise, the Kenyan government has taken drastic measures to contain the spread of the virus in Eastleigh and Old Town.

On May 7, 2020, the government locked down the two neighborhoods, one in Nairobi and the other in Mombasa, after a surge in confirmed coronavirus cases.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr Rashid Aman appealed to residents of the restricted areas to observe the outlined measures, including wearing face masks, observing social distancing, and maintaining high standards of hygiene.

Dr Aman warned that failure to abide by the government's guidelines could result in the closure of facilities such as supermarkets, which are still packed, and the increase in human and car traffic in Nairobi's central business district.

"These facilities face the risk of closure if they fail to abide by the government's guidelines," Dr Aman said.

The government has also announced that it will pay for testing and quarantining at public facilities, in an effort to encourage more volunteer testing.
