On May 9, 2020, the Kenyan government, through the COVID-19 Fund, flagged off the distribution of 10 tonnes of relief food to vulnerable communities in Nairobi's Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlement.

The assorted food items were aimed at supporting households amid dwindling economic performance in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced that an additional 250,000 households would receive stipends as part of government efforts to support vulnerable groups.

Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Center, Matiang'i stated that the government was set to upscale stipends to support families in hard-hit areas.

He also announced the government's plan to launch a slum upgrading program in informal settlements to enhance the livelihoods of slum dwellers.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had previously announced that the government would support vulnerable Kenyans during the period the country was battling the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of this effort, needy families would receive a weekly stipend from the government to cushion them from the effects of the pandemic.

On Friday, Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo announced that 4,000 vulnerable households in Mombasa's Old Town would begin receiving Sh2,000 under the government's social protection program from the following week.
