Published on May 9, 2020, Facebook has appointed Kenyan activist Maina Kiai to its newly formed Global Oversight Board.

As the Director of the Global Alliances and Partnerships at Human Rights Watch, Maina Kiai has a strong background in human rights advocacy. He previously served as the head of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

The Global Oversight Board, consisting of 20 members from around the world, will tackle complex debates about content moderation on Facebook and Instagram. Maina Kiai is part of the three Africans selected to the board, alongside Julie Owono from Cameroon and Asare-Kyei from Senegal.

The board's main areas of concern will focus on cases that impact many users, are critical to public discourse, or raise questions about Facebook's policies. Members will serve for a maximum of three 3-year terms.
