Published on May 9, 2020, JOOUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Gaya Agong announced that the university's scientists were researching the molecular aspect of the Covid-19 virus.

Professor Agong made the statement during a visit to the Siaya County Referral Hospital, where he presented disinfectants and sanitizers worth over Ksh 200,000 to the County Emergency Response Committee, alongside Education Chief Administration Secretary Mumina Bonaya.

According to Professor Agong, JOOUST scientists were not only researching ways to manage and control the virus but were also working towards finding a possible treatment and cure.

"We remain reliable partners in the fight against diseases, poverty, and food security," Professor Agong said, highlighting the university's human resource and commitment to finding a solution to the pandemic.

Education CAS Mumina Bonaya emphasized the importance of partnerships between universities and local communities, calling on JOOUST to continue its research and provide homemade solutions to combat the pandemic.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga commended the university for its donations, stating that they would be distributed to the less fortunate and praising the county's emergency response committee for its efforts in containing the spread of the virus.
