On May 9, 2020, the government launched a critical initiative to support vulnerable communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, funded by the Covid-19 Emergency Fund, aims to distribute 10 tonnes of assorted dry foods to those in need.
According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, the initiative will target 250,000 vulnerable families in its first phase. Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Center, where the distribution exercise kicked off, Matiang'i emphasized the importance of collective action in combating the pandemic.
CS Matiang'i handed over food supplies worth Ksh 300 million to residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities during these trying times. The distribution exercise is part of the government's efforts to cushion the effects of the pandemic on vulnerable communities.
As part of the initiative, CS Matiang'i also met with members of the Eastleigh Business Community to discuss collaborative ways of battling COVID-19. He reiterated that the fight against the pandemic must be done by observing the law, following the Ministry of Health's guidelines, and establishing safety nets for the vulnerable.
