On May 9, 2020, the government responded to allegations that a 15-day containment order in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate was malicious and ill-intended.
Interior and Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i toured the area and addressed local opinion leaders, dismissing their remarks as 'pure propaganda.'
According to Matiang'i, the containment order was implemented due to the area's high COVID-19 cases, with double-figure cases reported.
He emphasized that the government's goal was to protect the residents of Eastleigh and all Kenyans from the further spread of the pandemic, which had claimed 29 lives out of 621 infected persons.
Matangi'i also stated that the government was not capable of discriminating against any community and that the containment order was necessary to protect the residents and prevent the spread of the virus.
He urged the public to pull together and not spread malicious propaganda during this time, emphasizing that the government was working to protect all Kenyans.
