On Friday, children living with disabilities in Nairobi and its environs received a much-needed boost from First Lady Margaret Kenyatta's Beyond Zero initiative. The donation, part of the First Lady's contribution to the national response against Covid-19, aimed to cushion the children and their caregivers against the pandemic's adverse effects.
Angella Langat, Beyond Zero's Coordinator, presented the donation to nine charity and community-based organizations at Acorn Special Tutorials School in Gichungo, Nairobi County. The organizations cater for children with special needs and other vulnerable groups.
The donation included bales of Uji mix, maize flour, boxes of long-life milk, sanitizers, face masks, salt, bags of sugar, rice, beans, packets of tea leaves, cartons of cooking oil, and packaging bags.
Speaking at the event, Langat said, 'We are here to show solidarity with you during this time when the country and the world are grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic. We hope that this donation will cushion the children with disability and their caregivers.'
The nine organizations that received the donation included Acorn Special Tutorials Centre, Little Rock Centre, Crossing Bridges Ngong Branch, and Sweet Aroma, among others.
Directors of the beneficiary organizations expressed their gratitude to First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and the Beyond Zero team, saying the donation would not only help the children with special needs but also other vulnerable people in the neighbourhood.
