On May 9, 2020, the World Bank through the Kenya Smart Climate Agriculture Project and Nyeri county government launched the Thiha–Sagana irrigation project in Mukurweini Sub-County, funded to the tune of Ksh 34 million.

The project aims to improve food security, nutrition, and the social-economic base of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 500 farmers, who have been practicing sweet potato farming, will benefit from the project, which covers 60 hectares and will be expanded to 112 hectares.

Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga said the project will provide reliable water for farming, empower women in food production, and involve youth in modern farming to generate employment and intensify land use.

Kahiga added that his administration has supported the project with land for office construction and 4,060 pipes worth Ksh 2 million for water distribution.
