On May 8, 2020, a disturbing case of infanticide came to light in Nairobi, where a 32-year-old waitress, Ann Maina, was charged with unlawfully causing the death of her two-day-old infant.
According to the charges, Maina abandoned her baby girl in her house for two days, resulting in the infant's death. She then wrapped the body in papers and dumped it in a dustbin.
Garbage collectors at the city estate discovered the dead infant while sorting out the garbage and returned the corpse to her house, informing her neighbors.
Ann Maina has two other children, aged four and two, who live with her mother in Nanyuki, while she resides in Nairobi.
She was freed on a Sh100,000 bond with surety of a similar amount and an alternative cash bail of Sh100,000.
The case is expected to be heard in August.
