On Saturday, May 9, 2020, a countrywide power outage hit Kenya, leaving many without electricity for several hours.
The blackout, which started at 5:49am, affected operations in major hospitals, including the Kenyatta National Hospital and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
According to Kenya Power, the outage was caused by a system disturbance on their transmission network, which occurred at 5:49am.
Engineers from Kenya Power were quickly dispatched to identify the cause of the hitch and restore normal electricity supply.
Despite the inconvenience caused, power started to be restored in phases after hours, bringing relief to Kenyans who had been affected by the outage.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter had earlier announced an upsurge in water levels in key hydroelectricity dams due to heavy rains and flooding in parts of the country.
