Kenya woke up to a nationwide power outage on Saturday, leaving many without electricity to heat their homes, power their fridges, and run their businesses.

The blackout, which occurred at 5:49 am, was caused by a 'system disturbance' on the national grid, according to Kenya Power.

The power utility company has apologized for the inconvenience and assured its customers that engineers are working to identify and address the issue to restore normal electricity supply.

As the country struggles to cope with the Coronavirus pandemic, the power outage has added to the woes of many Kenyans who are already at home.

Those running electricity-powered businesses are counting losses, while others are left to wonder if a rogue monkey is to blame, reminiscent of a similar incident four years ago.

However, Kenya Power has not confirmed any monkey-related incident, and the cause of the power outage remains unknown.
