On May 9th, 2020, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Sicily Kariuki, flagged off the distribution of 800,000 fruit tree seedlings across the country.

The initiative, launched at Nyumba Ya Wazee in Kasarani Constituency, aims to support the government's goal of increasing the national forest cover to 10 per cent and contributing to the big four agenda on food security.

The seedlings, which include Avocados, cashew nuts, and coconuts, will be distributed to various counties, including Kiambu, Kajiado, Kirinyaga, Baringo, and Machakos.

CS Kariuki also planted the first Hass Avocado seedling at the Nyumba ya Wazee farm and donated foodstuffs, sanitizers, and gloves worth 300,000 to the home, which cares for 74 elderly people.

She emphasized the importance of coming together to support the most vulnerable members of society during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and floods.

So far, 360,000 fruit tree seedlings have been planted, and the Ministry plans to distribute the remaining 440,000 seedlings to farmers across all counties in liaison with county commissioners during the rainy season.
