On April 13, 2020, a police constable, Beckam Osoro, was involved in a fatal shooting at a miraa kiosk in Mathare Area 4, Nairobi.

Osoro, a police constable based at Muthaiga police station, was charged with murder before Justice Daniel Ogembo at the Milimani law courts.

According to the charges, Osoro shot and killed Reuben Karani Kiriinya, a 26-year-old miraa seller, while enforcing a curfew in the area.

Osoro denied the charges, and his application for bail will be heard on the next Friday.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had recommended murder charges against Osoro, and the probe file was forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Osoro was arrested alongside police constable Joseph Mwendwa of Kamukunji police station and Harrison Mwanza, the owner of the kiosk where Kiriinya was shot.

Corporal Robert Mburu of Pangani DCI offices, who investigated the murder, stated that there was no evidence to charge Mwendwa and Mwanza.

Osoro surrendered to the Starehe DCI offices hours after the shooting incident and handed over the Ceska pistol he used to shoot Kiriinya.

DCI officers recovered a spent cartridge and a bullet head from the scene of the shooting.

Osoro had been in custody at the Pangani police station.
