On May 9, 2020, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Samson Mwathethe bid farewell to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) after 42 years of service. The ceremony, a long-standing military tradition, was attended by senior military personnel and marked the end of an era in Kenya's military history.
Gen. Mwathethe, a Navy officer who joined the KDF in 1978, rose through the ranks to become the CDF in 2015. His retirement was celebrated with a 17-gun salute, a symbol of respect and honour for his dedication and service.
During the ceremony, Gen. Mwathethe launched a book titled 'War for Peace: Kenya's Military in the African Mission in Somalia 2012-2020', which captures the lessons and experiences of the Defence forces serving under Amisom.
Gen. Robert Kibochi, the incoming CDF, paid a glowing tribute to Gen. Mwathethe, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the KDF. He also undertook to continue the good work and raise the KDF to higher levels.
Gen. Mwathethe's wife, Amina, was also recognized for her support and understanding during his time as CDF. He thanked her for enduring the trials of being married to a military husband and for making everyday life better for him and their children.
