On May 8, 2020, thousands of people across the United States participated in a social media campaign to raise awareness about the tragic murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old man who was shot and killed on February 23, 2020.
The campaign, which used the hashtag #IRunWithMaud, was started by Jason Vaughn, a coach for Arbery's high school football team, and Akeem M. Baker, a friend of Arbery's.
"We thought it was a great idea to get it out to the public and to raise awareness about the tragic murder of my close friend," Baker said.
On Thursday, May 7, 2020, the two men who shot Arbery, Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34, were arrested and charged with murder.
Supporters of Arbery's family, including doctors, teachers, and professional athletes, participated in the campaign by sharing photographs of themselves running and using the hashtag #IRunWithMaud.
"Happy birthday to Ahmaud Arbery," New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins said in a video he recorded during his run on Friday, May 8, 2020. "Even though they arrested those two men, we've got to make sure they don't forget his face and that he gets his justice in court."
