On May 8, 2020, Mombasa governor Hassan Joho made a somber announcement, stating that one of the five individuals who had escaped from Old Town in Mombasa, Kenya, had succumbed to COVID-19.
According to Joho, the deceased had 'run away from hell and went to his death.'
Old Town, a densely populated area in Mombasa, had been a hotspot for COVID-19 cases in Kenya.
