On May 7, 2020, Governor Granton Samboja of Taita-Taveta County expressed concern over the increasing number of local residents crossing the border into Tanzania despite the ban on all border movements.

During an inspection tour in Taveta sub-county, the governor noted that the illegal border crossings were happening through various routes in the hinterland of the border villages.

"This is not the time to do anything that endangers your family, neighbors, and the country at large. We must stop such activities," Governor Samboja said.

As part of containment measures to halt the spread of the disease, the county has set up quarantine facilities at Mahoo Girls and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Taveta.

County Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha warned that security agencies would impound bikes, take individuals to quarantine, and charge them for criminal activities if they attempted to smuggle goods through the border.

"We will adhere to ministry of health directives during this time," she said.
