Published on May 8, 2020, Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo expressed gratitude to organisations and individuals who have pledged and honoured their support to the Emergency Response Committee, which is collecting donations from well-wishers to aid those affected by the COVID-19 cessation impasse.

Over ten tons of maize flour, rice, and cooking oil were handed over to the Committee from the Institute of Engineers of Kenya, Toyota Kenya, Civilizer Organisation, and the Gusii business community, among others.

The Commissioner revealed that the food reserves being collected, along with those from the government, have been distributed by the Kenya Red Cross in Mombasa, now in its second week.

Kitiyo warned that COVID-19 cases will increase in the coming days due to mass testing in Likoni and Changamwe, urging locals not to panic from the results.

"In the next few weeks, there will be a spike in COVID-19 cases, but the figures should not worry you; instead, take it as a sign that some good work is being done," said Kitiyo.

The Commissioner assured residents in affected areas that the cessation is not a punishment, but rather a measure to prevent the spread of the virus, and that the government is working to make their stay as comfortable as possible.
